STORYLINE:

STANDUP (English): GAO YANG, Xinhua correspondent
"The Pacific island country of Nauru has announced that it recognizes the one-China principle and has severed the so-called 'diplomatic relations' with Taiwan. Today, follow us onto the streets of Nauru to hear what local citizens have to say about their impression of China."

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): Local resident
"I know about China because of the Chinese food here in Nauru. Because we grew up with Chinese people since we were young. We know Chinese, we call them friends, they are friends."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): Local resident
"I know about China, the Great Wall of China, and other than that, we have a lot of Chinese people in the area. They've been here for many years. They're friendly people. And we love Chinese food as well. We love to eat there (in Chinese restaurants). That's our main food to eat on the island. Whenever we are abroad, we always miss Chinese food."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): Local resident
"We'd like to travel to China, to see the Great Wall of China and see what the culture is like. I believe they've been working together for the development of partnership."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): Local resident
"I do love Chinese. I do like the culture as well. I'm hoping to go to China to visit Maggie (a friend)'s mum. So hopefully I get to see a lot of Chinese culture as well. I've had a lot of Chinese friends here before and I still have them now here. So it's really nice to have a lot of Chinese and correspond with Chinese people. Just multi-cultural together. So it's really good. So I'm hoping to have a good relationship with China as well."

Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Yaren.
