Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was slammed for riding a helicopter to a Coldplay concert amid traffic chaos in the country.

The controversial leader - son of the notoriously corrupt Ferdinand Marcos - and his family were spotted leaving on a helicopter amid bumper-to-bumper traffic around the Philippine Arena on the outskirts of the capital Manila on January 19.

Critics said his trip to see the British rock band was a misuse of taxpayer money - particularly when the city is known for its chronic congestion that lacks state investment.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Security Group (PSG) defended the use of the aircraft, citing 'unforeseen traffic complications' at the venue.

PSG commander Jesus Nelson Morales said in a statement: 'Yesterday, the Philippine Arena experienced an unprecedented influx of 40,000 individuals eagerly attending a concert, resulting in unforeseen traffic complications along the route.

'Recognizing that this traffic situation posed a potential threat to the security of our President, the PSG took decisive action by opting for the presidential chopper.'

Under Section 2 of Administrative Order No. 239, s. 2008 of the Philippines, 'the use of government vehicles for private social functions such as receptions, balls, theatres, and for other personal purposes is absolutely prohibited.'

Incumbent Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr., also known by his nickname Bongbong, is the son and namesake of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose rule was marked by human rights abuses and widespread corruption. His mother, Imelda, was known for her lavish shopping trips and collection of shoes.

The strongman's reign ended when he was ousted through a revolution in 1986. His son Bongbong would later be elected as president in the country's 2022 national polls.
