Breathtaking footage taken from a plane shows the Grindavik volcano erupting in Iceland on February 8.

Lava could be seen flowing from the volcano as the aircraft descended into the country to land at the Reykjavik airport.

Staff from the Dalkeith High School in Midlothian, Scotland, recorded the mesmerising scene, which saw fountains of lava spew from the fissure in south-west Iceland.

Plumes of lava shot more than 50m (160ft) into the air in the third volcanic eruption since December last year.

The nearby town of Grindavik was already evacuated during the last eruption on January 14.
