A lorry overloaded with sugarcane flipped in the middle of the road - prompting frightened individuals to flee in panic.

Smartphone footage recorded in the area of Mawana, in the Meerut district, in India's state of Uttar Pradesh, showed the driver struggling to keep the heavily loaded vehicle on its wheels on March3.

Just moments later the lorry can be seen overturning in the middle of the road and scattering its cargo on the street as the driver leapt out at the last moment, narrowly escaping injury.

Meanwhile, scared passersby fled the scene as the lorry brought down two utility poles during the fall and disrupted the electricity supply in the area.

Two nearby stores were allegedly damaged at the time, however no casualties were reported in the incident.

Local media in India revealed that shortly after police arrived on the spot and removed the lorry and the broken poles from the area.

They also seized the vehicle and took it to the police station. It was not disclosed whether the driver had been located.
