Zoo prepares fruits for their elephants on National Thai Elephant Day
Zookeepers prepared fruits for their elephants on National Thai Elephant Day.
The jumbos were treated to spreads of grass, banana, sugar cane, pineapple, pumpkin, carrot, mango, and dragon fruit at the Chiang Mai Zoo on March 13.
Footage shows the hungry pachyderms rushing over to devour the feast laid out on khantoke trays in their enclosure at the Asian elephant exhibition zone.
Chiang Mai Zoo Director Wuttichai Muangman said: 'We organised the activity to celebrate the three elephants and to remind visitors of their significance, particularly the 25-year-old Phang Chai Yo, who was the symbol of the 13th Asian Games in 1998.
'The zoo is also taking care of two other elephants Phang Sang Dao, 15, and the calf Phang Saen Suay, 3.'
She added that the goal of the activity was to raise awareness among visitors about the importance of elephants and their conservation as a national animal.
There were also exhibits and colouring activities for children visiting the zoo for National Thai Elephant Day.
As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
