A teenager survived being impaled by steel rebars after being clipped by a pickup truck.

Eric Lucagbo, 19, was walking on the roadside when a vehicle struck and pushed him towards a construction site in Cagayan de Oro City, the Philippines, on March 16.

Three 12mm rebars, used to reinforce the road under repair, skewered through his body, which firemen had to cut before medics could rush him to the hospital.

Footage shows the lad screaming and crying in pain with steel bars stabbed through his body on the ground behind the black Toyota Hilux that hit him while waiting for help to arrive. Aside from him, the truck also hit the rear bumper of a red Kia vehicle parked nearby.

Cagayan de Oro City Police Office officer Evan Vinas said: ‘We are still investigating the driver. Initially, it was found that he had fallen asleep on the steering wheel, so he clipped the pedestrian.'

The youngster was taken to Northern Mindanao Medical Center for an operation which successfully removed the rebars from his body. He would remain under observation until fully recovered.

Meanwhile, the unidentified driver was arrested for questioning but was later released after reportedly settling with Eric's family.

However, Police Lieutenant Colonel Evan said they would file a Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Serious Physical Injuries case against the driver if the family changed their mind. The driver could be imprisoned for up to two months if found guilty.

He said: ‘We would endorse the appropriate case against the driver to the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office.'
