An inauguration ceremony for the new Iranian consulate building in the Syrian capital Damascus was held on Monday, after the previous site was destroyed by an Israeli strike last week.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, alongside his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, attended the ceremony of the new building, which is around 100 meters away from the old site.

Before the ceremony, the two ministers visited the destroyed consulate and expressed condolences for the victims.

Israel launched the missile attack against the consulate building from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on April 1, killing 13 people, including two senior Iranian military officials.

In a message following the attack, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed that the country's "brave men" would inflict "a regret-inducing punishment" on Israel for its "criminal" attack. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi also vowed that the "cowardly crime will not go unanswered."
