Nevado del Ruiz Volcano spews clouds of ash in Colombia
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano spewed clouds of ash in Colombia.
Footage shows the massive plume above the volcano as seen by one of the team members from the Colombian Geological Service conducting fieldwork on April 13.
The ash emission associated with seismic activity was recorded at 10:07 a.m. from the Bruma monitoring station, situated at an altitude of 4860 meters above sea level.
Nevado del Ruiz has remained Colombia's most active volcano for over a decade. Its eruptive process is characterized by minor eruptions—ash emissions with column heights less than 3km—that do not significantly impact the population.
However, it is crucial not to normalize the behaviour of this volcano, which currently maintains a Yellow Alert status.
This designation indicates a reduced level of instability and, consequently, a lower likelihood of a significant eruption.
Despite this, the volcano's activity levels remain markedly higher than those of any other volcano in Colombia at this alert level.
It is essential to recognize that its activity could escalate rapidly at any time, prompting an Orange Alert indicating significant changes in monitored parameters or even a Red Alert signifying an eruption.
The Colombian Geological Service emphasizes the danger of approaching the volcano's crater and urges tourists and citizens to closely monitor its evolution through the weekly bulletins published every Tuesday, as well as other information shared on official channels and instructions from local, departmental, and national disaster risk management authorities.
