This is the amusing moment a wild tusker attacked an elephant statue it mistook for a rival in Thailand.

The aggressive jumbo named Plai Krae walked into the Ban Mu Si village to look for food when it encountered two elephant sculptures outside a temple pavilion in Nakhon Ratchasima province on April 24.

Thinking they were real animals, Plai Krae charged and broke both tusks on one of the fake elephants. It then ambled off to munch on some sugarcane before walking back into the nearby woods.

Temple officials said the damaged statue will be repaired.

In August 2021, a territorial wild elephant bull also attacked an elephant statue at the Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima. It knocked the inanimate object over, then walked away into a forest as park rangers monitored its movements.

There are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
