Footage has emerged from the US of baby spiny softshell turtles hatching.

The video, filmed at rom Grand Isle County late last year by a worker at Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, shows a baby turtle struggling to get out of its egg whilst another one takes its first steps.

These turtles are one of the largest freshwater turtle species in North America. They get their name from the spiny, cone-like projections on the leading edge of their carapaces.

Baby spiny softshell turtles hatcing during my work with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department in an attempt to recover as many eggs before the winter hit. They are an endangered species in Vermont and are extremely cute and adorable especially as babies!
