Remarkable aerial footage has emerged showing the world's deepest underwater sinkhole.

The video, captured on Tuesday, shows the huge sinkhole located in the South China Sea.

Researchers announced this week that the sinkhole, known to local fishermen as the 'Dragon Hole', is probably the world's deepest, reaching about 987 feet below the surface.

Due to the discovery, China's Sansha City has decided to allocate 5 million yuan ($748,000) annually for maritime environmental conservation over the next three years.

The funds will be used to support scientific research and development of new methods and equipment in environmental protection, said Shi Guoning, a senior official in Sansha's Land Resources and Environmental Protection Bureau.
