Awesome footage has emerged of a GoPro attached to a helium weather balloon entering the stratosphere.

The video, filmed over Germany on September 22, shows the three-hour flight compressed into an ten-minute clip, including stunning images of the Earth's upper atmosphere.

During the mission, the balloon drifted 120 kilometres east of where the filmer launched it.

To capture the amazing pictures, astrophotographer Julian Wessel had to use a "box made of styrofoam attached to the balloon.

"In this box was a power supply for the camera, a GPS tracker and a hand warmer, which will keep the instruments warm at that altitude," he wrote online.

The flight to the Stratosphere need to be done with a weather balloon filled with Helium. Because Helium is so less denser than Air it can pull a payload up to 35000 m. The Helium will then expand due to the low air pressure in the upper atmosphere und the balloon will burst when the material of the balloon is at it's highest elasticity.

To get this on video I used a box made of styrofoam attached to the ballon. In this box was a power supply for the camera, a GPS tracker and a hand warmer, which will keep the instruments warm at that altitude.



I filmed it because I'm an astrophotographer, who takes pictures from the moon, Galaxys and every other object related to space. I'm interested in how the Atmosphere is layered and what the Earth looks like from high altitude.



The launch was on 22nd September at 9am. The whole flight last 3 hours and the balloon driftet about 120 km east from my launch site.
