A WREATH has been laid to remember the Cockleshell Heroes at the North Corner memorial in Devonport.
The service was conducted at 11am today, with around 130 people present and 20 veterans from the Royal Marines Association.
There were three standard bearers and a Royal Marines bugler and after the service The Steam Packet Inn in Devonport organised a buffet.Don Ligertwood, aged 76, from Honicknowle, is a member of the Royal Marines Association and served in the Royal Marines for 22 years.He said: "It was very well organised. We do it every year to remember the men who gave their lives for everyone who came after them."Friday will mark the 70th anniversary of Operation Frankton in which only two of a ten-marine team came back alive.
It is known as one of the most daring raids in recent history led by Royal Marine Major Herbert 'Blondie' Hasler.
Devonport marine, Corporal George Sheard, was one of the eight to lose their lives as part of the planned attack against merchant shipping in the harbour of Bordeaux, France
