Shocking CCTV footage has emerged of a 15-year-old girl being hit by a white van in Bristol, UK on Friday.

The video captures the moment the van hit her as she crossed Hengrove Lane on her way to school.

According to a neighbour, the driver "briefly stopped and pulled the screaming and crying girl to the pavement, before getting back into his van and driving off."

The girl reportedly only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Police have arrested a 22-year-old man who was charged with dangerous driving.

The vehicle was not insured, police said.

At 7.35am on Friday 14th October 2016, a 15 year old school girl was walking along a popular school route. She approaches and very carefully crosses the road but when mid-way across, a white van travelling far beyond the 20mph speed limit impacts her head-on causing her to roll over the bonnet and onto the windscreen before falling back to the ground.

The van driver, in a company van believed to belong to 'Vehicle Matters' in Bristol, briefly stopped and pulled the screaming and crying girl to the pavement, before getting back into his van and driving off. Neighbours heard the screaming and quickly called for the emergency services, one quick thinking neighbour also took a photo of the van as it sped off, capturing its number plate and leading to a quick arrest of the suspect.

CCTV attached to a house captured the entire event and proved that the initial claim of the driver that he merely "clipped the girl with his wing mirror" was false and that he had actually collided directly into her at speed.

Fortunately and incredibly, the girl involved suffered only minor cuts, bruises and shock but had this impact have been with a younger child or an older person, the outcome could have been far worse, possibly resulting in death.

Residents on Hengrove Lane and Hengrove Avenue have been campaigning for traffic calming measures for many years to reduce speeding motorists but requests for speed bumps or turning Hengrove Avenue into a one-way road to avoid 'shortcut mentality' have fallen on deaf ears. Bristol Council actually claimed that "such expense cannot be justified unless there are more accidents". This is a daily school route and yet no crossing exists at this lower end of Hengrove Lane to avoid incidents like this.

The incident will change the driver and his family's life forever, as well as the life of the girl that was hit. Speeding and driving irresponsibly can kill and affect the lives of many.
