A touching video has emerged from the US of a man serenading his grandmother on her birthday.

The footage, captured in Palm Beach County, FL, on July 27, shows the 98-year-old woman getting emotional as her grandson sings her favourite song.

''I have the most precious memories of my Grandma Jean doing everything with a song,'' the man later wrote online.

''When I was eight years old she taught me how to sing 'Unforgettable' by Nat King Cole because it was her favourite song and I was to sing it with her for her birthday every year. Hence a tradition began.''

''Grandma lost her singing voice in her late eighties and though life with all its twists and turns put us in different parts of the country I continued the tradition even if it was just by phone or Skype,'' he added.

I have the most precious memories of my Grandma Jean doing everything with a song. I didn't matter if she was doing laundry or making lasagne, she was always singing and her voice was rich, velvety and beautiful. When I was eight years old she taught me how to sing Unforgettable by Nat King Cole because it was her "favorite song and I was to sing it with her for her birthday every year". Hence a tradition began and throughout the years we would sing "My Funny Valentine" on Valentines Day, "White Christmas" during the Holidays and of course "Unforgettable" on her birthday.

I was eight, thirty three years ago and since that time both of our voices have changed with grandma loosing her singing voice in her late eighties and though life with all its twists and turns put us in different parts of the country I continued the tradition even if it was just by phone or Skype. This year was different though, this year she would be turning 98 and I was going to do everything I can to surprise her and thats what was captured on this video, me surprising my 98 year old grandmother with her favorite song.

When I re-watch it I have no idea how I held it together for most of the song ... I did loose it at the end and what you don't see is the sweet tears and "I love you's" that followed.

This captured moment has already been a gift to so many and my only hope is that it continues to inspire everyone to hold their loved ones a little bit closer and longer ... especially when our years are closer to our first breath and last.
