Midwife Toad beep sounds - France

Buy video

Have you ever enjoyed a nice summer evenening in, for example, France, until you hear some sort of 'mechanical beeping sound' coming from wherever?
You get out of your chair, and as soon as you think you are close, the sound is gone, leaving you behind totally confused. Then, suddenly, you hear it again: beep... beep... You start to think: Is it an alarm? Is my battery low?
No, none of it all. Asking some locals, they explained it was a toad. Specifically, 'Midwife toad'.
Between May and August Midwife toads make a high-pitched "beep beep" sound. It's surprisingly loud for such a small amphibian. The noise is entertaining at first, but after a while becomes irritating. People who live near to them often complain of sleepness nights.
