Finding nemo in Fiji. The Fiji Clown fish

Buy video

Sadly, these particular fish were killed in Cyclone Winston. The Fiji islands have their very own nemo, the Fiji Barberi Clownfish (Amphiprion barberi) I used to spend a lot of time with these guys when I was working in Fiji. Clownfish have a symbiotic relationship with the anemone which they reside in. The anemone can sting other fish but it has evolved not to sting the clownfish. In return for a safe and protective home, the clownfish benefits the anemone in several important ways. These include cleaning the anemone, providing nutrients in the form of waste, and scaring away predatory fish such as the butterfly fish. Seeing their entire reef destroyed by a cat 5 cyclone was very emotional.
