Locals residents at Leilani Estates in Hawaii woke up yesterday (May 9) with the roar of gas escaping out of a new lava fissure near their properties.

The footage shows lava seeping from a ground fissure as toxic gas spreads in the air.

A man can be seen filming the spectacle at a short distance.

The filmer writes:  ‘’I woke up and thought I heard the sound of a jet engine.

‘’Of course, I had to go check it out.

‘’The roar of the gas shooting out of the ground was simply incredible.

‘’It looked like a blow torch on steroids.’’
