Miscommunication between keeper and defender results in howler own-goal

Buy video

This breakdown in communication between a goalkeeper and his defenders led to a cringe-inducing own goal.

Footage filmed on July 7 at a pre-season friendly between Sutton United and Coventry City shows Sky Blues keeper Lee Burge perform a save to stop the Sutton attack from a piercing run into his box.

As the Coventry defence looks cool in possession, Zain Westbrook passes the ball back towards the direction of the goal.

But his team-mate doesn't touch it – and with Burge well clear of his goal line, the ball coasts into the back of Coventry's net.

A furious Burge barks at his defenders before collecting the ball.

The match, at Sutton's Gander Green Lane, ended in a 2-0 victory for the non-league side.
