Bottlenose Dolphins Strand Feeding on Folly Beach

Buy video

On August 4th, I was fortunate enough to find a pair of bottlenose dolphins strand feeding along the shoreline. I was visiting Folly Beach, an island just outside of Charleston, SC. Strand Feeding is a method of hunting where the dolphins swim in patterns to collect fish close to the shore. The dolphins will then rush the fish onto the beach and at times, they even fully remove their bodies from the water in the process. This is a learned behavior, exclusive to the SC Coastal areas. In this instance, the dolphin actually waited for me to kick the fish towards him before returning to the water. I spent several hours watching them on their hunt this day.
