A driver narrowly avoided a major accident after a loose spare tyre from an oncoming vehicle struck his car.

Dashcam footage captured on August 10 in Aurora, Illinois, shows the moment a tyre slips off the bed of an oncoming pickup truck, causing the item to cross the road at strike the camera car.

The filmer writes: "I tried to swerve into the shoulder but the tire still hit the truck on the left door and fender."

The filmer adds that the car from which the tyre fell almost fled the scene, but the driver changed their mind when the camera car turned around.

"They pulled over down the street out of cameras view," he added.

Was filmed with onboard dash camera. What cause the accident was a oncoming truck was passing by as its spare tire fell from under his truck which then bounced towards my lane. I tried to swerve into the shoulder but the tire still hit the truck on the left door and fender. Driver of the loose tire almost fled the scene until they saw me turn around to go after them. They pulled over down the street out of cameras view.
