The five-year-old kangaroo Storm which went missing from his sanctuary in Jupiter Farms, Florida, was found safe early on Thursday morning.

According to local media, two friends of the marsupial's owner, Eric Westergard, went searching for Storm on Wednesday night after wildlife officers said they had spotted the 4-ft tall eastern grey on Jupiter Farms Road at around 9:30 pm.

Shortly after 1 am, the pair spotted the marsupial next to a mailbox at 159th and 98th Trail North.

They called Westergard, who arrived with several vehicles and began calling out Storm's name as a searcher shone a spotlight on the dark street.

“I was just talking to him and I could tell he was listening to my voice, trying to tell what was going on,” Westergard said.

Approaching within distance, Westergard then grabbed the marsupial by the tail. Storm recognised his owner's voice and allowed his body to curl into Westergard's arms as he held them out.

The successful search-party marked their success with an impromptu middle-of-the-night celebration.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investgating how Storm escaped.
