A cooling tower was demolished by controlled explosives this morning. (Sunday 28th July) The event took place at Ferrybridge Power Station in West Yorkshire shortly before 10am. A warning bang was heard 30 seconds before the explosives were fired and the 114m tall Tower 6 as it was known was brought to a pile of rubble in just a matter of seconds. 1000s of spectators watched and drivers abandoned their vehicles as roads were closed off in the surrounding area. The M62 & A1M motorways were also brought to a stand still 15 minutes before the blast to avoid drivers panicking as the tower collapses . Another 4 towers at the Ferrybridge site are also scheduled for demolition in the autumn. The cooling towers is a local landmark and can be seen from as far as Hull & North Yorkshire.
