It was yesterday afternoon, Monday, December 2
nd
, 2019, around 2:00 pm
that the cab drivers of Los Angeles who were servicing the new LAXit pick up lot,
decided to stage a peaceful strike at the Taxi Holding lot to demonstrate their
frustrations and impatience with LAX Authorities for the unfair treatment of their
business practice. They decided to stay united, steadfast and committed until they
would meet with proper authorities for dialogue. If you just observed, you could
feel their passion and read their tenacity from their faces. They were firm and did
not proceed to go inside the LAXit pick-up. This ride that would normally take
minutes to get to, was taking them close to one hour to finally reach and be placed
right in the middle between Uber and Lyft for a fair. The Taxis no match against
the ride-app companies with their extremely low and uncontested fair prices. In the
past the for convenience to customers, the Taxis traditionally always loaded
passengers right outside the curbside of baggage claims for immediate pick-ups.
As they still do today at JFK, Logan, O’Hare and SFO airports respectively while
the network transportation companies are placed at a central location.
Finally, after one hour the Director of Labor Relations from LAWA, Los
Angeles World Airports, did show up at the Taxi Holding lot exit driveway, where
the cab drivers were all massed. Upon request they decided to hold an immediate
dialogue with a drivers’ delegation at the Airport Headquarters building. Except
for one independent journalist which, Tony Vela, we are grateful, he shot got the
whole event on video and uploaded on YouTube. Still, there was no television or
print media present.
This strike was a peaceful demonstration. The displayed their First
Amendment rights. The heart and courage of the strikers was unmatched with
anything that I had seen at LAX. Later in that evening after the outcome of the
meeting at LAWA headquarters, they drivers went back to the holding lot with the
good news of a possible pilot program for the taxis, and asked everybody to go
back to work and service the airport.
