GARRY'S STORY: AT THE AGE OF 55, HE'S SLEEPING ROUGH AS WINTER ARRIVES.
It's 7.30am in Watermans Park, Brentford, and Garry's already sitting on his usual bench, all his worldly goods in a suitcase at his side. Early morning commuters march and cycle past without much of a glance.
"People are going to die out here in this weather. People are going to die out here.
"I'm on £45 a week Universal Credit. I smoke and I drink. I don't take drugs. I normally buy drink first. I might go two or three days with nothing to eat. The drink is feeding me, keeping me warm.
"I know people who walk into Greggs, grab a sandwich and walk out.
"Last night I slept in Strand on the Green, in two sleeping bags. I sleep where no one can see me, for my own safety."
He says the cold stops him sleeping well, as it does others like him.
"Yesterday with this girl and bloke, we went to the bookies, nice and warm in there. We fell asleep all round the table. Put our heads down. Staff goes, 'You can't sleep in here.' My mate goes, 'We are sleeping in here.' The poor girl's snoring her head off 'cos she can't sleep at night 'cos its too cold.
"They threatened to call the police, so we walked to McDonalds, done the same thing, sat down, tried to go to sleep. It's what you've got to do."
Will you get through the winter? "I have to. I've got no choice."
How will you spend today? "Go to a bookies, keep warm. Go to another bookies, keep warm. Go to another bookies, keep warm. They give you free coffee because they think you're going to gamble.
"People just don't care anymore."
Until recently, Garry was living on an abandoned boat at Watermans, the cabin open to the elements except for plastic sheeting. But it got a hole knocked in it and sank. He kept trying to clear it up when the tide went out but that became hopeless. He says he's never slept rough before.
"I've been to the council, the homeless unit, on numerous occasions. They don't care. They really do not care. They're not interested.
"I want to get a job. I used to be a bus driver. But when you apply for a job, they want your mobile phone, your email, your address – I haven't got all that.
"I don't know anything about the hostels, where they are, what they do, anything."
