Hundreds of protests gathered in Kolkata, India, on December 9 to demand justice for victims of deadly rape cases.

Demonstrations have taken place in cities including Delhi and Bengaluru after the body of a woman was found burnt in Hyderabad.

A 23-year-old woman was set on fire by a gang of men on Thursday (December 5) while she was on her way to court in northern India. The victim suffered 90 per cent burns and died after being treated in hospital.

Outrage has continued to grow in India over the gang-rape and murder of a 27-year-old woman, with protesters taking to the streets. Demonstrations spread to cities including Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata and MPs spoke out in parliament following the discovery last week of the woman’s burned body in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old rape victim was set ablaze by a gang of men, including the alleged rapists, as she made her way to court in northern India on Thursday, stirring public outrage and shame over the scourge of crimes against women. The victim, who had suffered 90 percent burns was flown in an air ambulance to New Delhi for better medical care, but later she died after 40 hours battle. Protesters and parliamentarians are pressing for courts to fast-track rape cases and demanding tougher penalties.
Violent crimes against women have been in the spotlight in India since 2012 when the fatal gang-rape of a young woman aboard a moving bus in Delhi prompted hundreds of thousands to take to the streets to demand stricter rape laws.

To condemn the incidents and to raise voice against the crimes a group of citizens from the organization "Unite to Protest Violence against Women" gathered in Hazre more in Kolkata today to Demand Accountability from the State and Questioned why the Government has failed to safeguard women’s rights. Men and women shouted slogans against the crimes and marched in the city capital and lit candles for the victims of these heinous crimes.
