Dolphins frolic close to Spanish coast as Covid-19 leaves beaches deserted
Residents were amazed by a pod of dolphins swimming close to the Spanish coast after the beaches were deserted because of the coronavirus lockdown.
Footage from a resident shows the beautiful creatures leaping out of the ocean in Sant Pol de Mar in Catalonia on March 30th.
The area would normally be packed with visitors enjoying the beach and sea but tourism has been halted by the Covid-19 pandemic gripping the world, with residents being forced to stay at home.
Local media reported that ''many people are now seeing more dolphins near the Catalan coast''. They suggested that this could be because more people are staying at home and observing the area.
However, they also reported that the sightings have increased ''because the beaches are empty, without human presence''.
Since the lockdown began on March 14, dolphins have also been sighted in Sant Pol (Maresme) and Tamariu (Baix Emporda).
There have also been reports from Barcelona of wild boars roaming the streets, eagles and even wolves appearing in the city.
''The truth is that with the confinement, which has left deserted spaces, empty of human presence throughout the territory, different species of animals have taken advantage to regain ground,'' one report stated.
