Mapogo Lion, Makulu feeding on a Buffalo in the Sabi Sands, greater Kruger National Park in 2009.

Famous Lions know as the Mapogo coalition:

The Mapogo coalition of 6 Lions began its reign in around 2006 where these 6 Lions, Makulu, Rasta, Pretty Boy, Dreadlocks, Mr T and Kinky Tail, were often observed being more aggressive in bringing down the Buffalo.

Makulu the oldest by 2 years and Mr. T often clashed horns and were closely matched, however after Makulu managed to grab and bite Mr. T's legs showing his dominance both Mr. T and Kinky Tail broke away from the coalition leaving the remaining four brothers.

Kinky Tail (also called Shaka) and Mr. T (also called Satan) headed east to control the northern part of the coalitions territory in the Sabi Sands, Kruger national park. Its was at this time that I managed to film these two savage Lions cross over the Sand river as they moved North and East. Both Mr. T and Kinky Tail were a savage pair killing and evening eating many other Lions over the years. When they were united with the other four brothers it is said that between them they killed over 100 Lions including cubs over an area of 70 000 Hectares.

It was in June 2010 that a coalition of five male lions named the Majingilanes entered in Mapogo territory to attempt a take over.
During a Buffalo hunt, Kinky Tail and Mr. T were able to isolate one of the Majingilane males and began chasing him. When they caught him Mr. T bit his neck while Kinky Tail ripped apart the groin area inflicting a lot of bleeding. Eventually Kinky Tail and Mr. T managed to break the Majingilane lion's spine leaving him immobile and left to die.
Later that night, two of the Majingilane brothers chased Kinky Tail and the other two caught up and Kinky Tail was not able to fight off four large Lions on his own and by the time his brother Mr. T arrived it was to late. The Majingilane brothers has broken his neck and ripped his genitals. This new coalition were just as savage and ate most of Kinky Tail's back legs and his Tail.

After Kinky Tail's death, Mr. T moved out of the area to the West to rejoin his former coalition with Makulu, Rasta, Pretty Boy and Dreadlocks.
Lucky for him he was able to rejoin without to much trouble until he started seeking out, killing and eating his brothers cubs. It was clear Mr. T was trying to take over leadership of the coalition and began to mate with the females to sire his own offspring.

Over the next two years Rasta disapeared and some believe he was killed by poachers and Dreadlocks was killed by people living in communities outside the reserve as he kept finding his was out.

At this point in around 2012 the Mapogo coalition was down to just three members, Makhulu who was now 14 years old, Pretty Boy and Mr. T. were now both 12 years old.

On the 16th March 2012, another coalition of four lions know as the Selatis entered the Mapogo territory from the south. They targeted Mr. T and managed to bite through his back imobalising him after a while they left him to die.

This sparked the end of the famous coalition known as the Mapogos!
A fight broke out between Makulu, Pretty Boy and two large Kruger park males who chased the remaining two out of their territory. They were aparently sighted together entering the Paul Kruger gate into the Kruger national park later in 2012.
They were seen once again together towards the end of 2012 feeding on a Buffalo and then at the begining of 2013 Makulu was seen for the last time in Mala Mala (Sabi Sands) back in his old territory.
