When the giant Keck telescope is pointed at you

Buy video

The twin telescopes of the Keck Observatory at about 13,000 feet (4,145 meters) atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii are rotated to protect the mirrors from ice falling when the dome opens. Each of the telescopes weighs 300 tons and operates with nanometer precision. The telescopes’ primary mirrors are 10-meters in diameter and are each composed of 36 hexagonal segments that work in concert as a single piece of reflective glass. Our party was fortunate to be inside this magnificent precision instrument to witness it rotating to point at us inside where we could see our repeating reflections in the giants mirrors. Thank you to the Keck Observatory for giving us this experience and to Mr. Ron Laub for guiding us.
