In Brussels, police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse people who gathered for a free festival advertised on Facebook, that was in fact an April Fools prank.

Despite the fact that the supposed organisers and the authorities said in advance that the 'festival' was a prank, young people still gathered, violating pandemic measures that apply in Belgium.

Some attendees said that as they were attending with housemates and maintaining social distance from others, they themselves were not in violation of the rules.

When police attempted to disperse the crowds, a few turned violent and the police resorted to using chemical sprays and water cannons.

About 100 people were detained and about 10 policemen were injured.
