BROOKLYN, N.Y. – April 3, 2021: Demonstrators burned pieces of paper on which they’d written their student loan balances during a protest to demand that United States Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer pressure President Joe Biden to cancel all student loan debt and support legislation to make college free for all. Earlier this year, Schumer proposed a plan to cancel $50,000 of federal student loan debt for individual borrowers – but protesters who gathered near his Brooklyn residence urged him to go further. The event was co-sponsored by NYC-DSA Debt & Finance Working Group, Columbia Barnard YDSA, Free CUNY and Rank and File Action.
