Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared on Friday a state of emergency for Tokyo and the western prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo from Sunday April 25th to May 11th.

It is already the third state of emergency declared to reduce the spread of COVID-19 but there are fears this won't be enough to curb the spread just three months before the Olympics.

Video filmed on Sunday shows restaurants and karaoke bars shuttered, although Shibuya's famed Hachiko crossing was still full of young people.

The Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared on Friday (2021-04-23) a state of emergency for Tokyo and the western Japan prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo from Sunday April 25th to May 11th. It is already the third state of emergency to reduce the spread of the corona virus and it also amid skepticism it will be enough to curb a rapid coronavirus resurgence just three months ahead of the Olympics. Tougher restrictions, such as banning restaurants and bars from serving alcohol, asking department stores and movie theaters to close temporarily, and barring fans at sports games. Some business owners follow the order – some not. Even under the state of the emergency many people are on the street e.g. in Shibuya on the famous intersection / “scramble crossing”.
