Cute Deer Baby Feeding

As this February-born fawn suckles its slender-necked mother, an #EasternSwampDeer in Kaziranga National Park, it reminds us of the adaptability of this sub-species to a floodplain. With an average of 8 months of gestation, the most likely conception time could be dated to late May or June (2020) that corresponds to the beginning of rutting in April and May (2020). Interestingly, I have seen the stags rutting in December and January in #Kanha that makes November as the peak month for most of the fawning. Has the swamp deer in Kaziranga modified their breeding cycle in response to the annual flooding? By the time the next round of flood engulfs Kaziranga NationalPark this fawn would be strong enough to take the arduous marathon swimming down south to Karbi hills. Had this sub-species followed the same breeding cycle as its central Indian counterpart, the mother deer would be struggling to swim in its mid-gestation.
