Tunisia's president dismissed the government and froze parliament on Sunday, prompting crowds to fill major cities in support of a move that dramatically escalated a political crisis and that his opponents called a coup.
President Kais Saied said he would assume executive authority with the assistance of a new prime minister, in the biggest challenge yet to the democratic system Tunisia introduced in a 2011 revolution.

The video was taken last night in La Marsa, Tunis, a few minutes after the President’s announcement to remove the government of Mechici. People (all ages and genders) took to the streets spontaneously, gathered in the main street honking, singing and chanting. They sang the national anthem alongside other things against Mechichi and al nahdha. The célébration started to wind down around 1 AM.

It follows months of deadlock and disputes pitting Saied, a political independent, against Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and a fragmented parliament as Tunisia has descended deeper into an economic crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi, the head of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party which has played a role in successive coalitions, decried it as an assault on democracy and called on Tunisians to take to the streets in opposition.

President Kais Saied has suspended the parliament for 30 days and dismissed the prime minster, Hichem Mechichi. On Monday, the parliament was surrounded by police and military forces. The parliament speaker, Ennahdha party leader Rached Ghannouchi, was not allowed to enter. Police were on-site to prevent clashes between Ennahdha's supporters and those who were in favor of the president’s decision.
