TikTok star's eyelashes and eyebrow turn white from rare vitiligo
A TikToker has opened up about suffering depression and anxiety because of a condition called vitiligo, which has left her with a white eyebrow and white eyelashes on one side of her face.
Victoria Santiago lives in Kentucky, US with her husband, Giovani, and their three children, and works as an independent contractor.
As a teenager, the mum dealt with acne and tinea versicolor, a common fungal infection that causes small, discoloured patches on the skin.
She was always self-conscious about the way her skin looked and was left distraught when in 2016, she developed yet another skin condition.
It began with a strand of white hair on her left eyebrow.
As the months passed, Victoria's entire left eyebrow and left eyelashes turned white from vitiligo, which causes pale white patches to develop on the skin due to a lack of melanin.
Victoria suffered from anxiety and depression because of her appearance and would avoid making eye contact with people in public, fearing they judged her look.
She would “meltdown” and cry while looking at herself in the mirror doing her makeup and became self-conscious about her face.
“After developing vitiligo, I used to cry while looking in the mirror and have little meltdowns while doing my makeup,” Victoria said.
“Being out in public was always hard especially when I stopped hiding it.
“Some people didn’t understand that I was trying to embrace it and instead would give unsolicited advice.
“Dealing with the stares from strangers and constant worry about what others were thinking gave me anxiety.
“I still at times deal with those same feelings.
“Some days I try hard to avoid eye contact with strangers so I don’t have to deal with any comments, even if it’s positive.
“I was always self-conscious about how I looked growing up.
“I was constantly being compared to others.
“I have tinea versicolor too, I tend to have flare-ups during the warmer months so hiding it wasn’t easy.
“I was never bullied for it but it was pointed out a lot and it made me self-conscious.”
While she was struggling, the mum's family and friends were incredibly supportive, particularly her husband, in helping her embrace her appearance.
She said: “My husband has been my biggest supporter and I’m so thankful for him.
“I honestly don’t think I’d be where I’m at with my confidence level if it weren’t for him.
“The confidence I have now, I wish I had a few years back and sometimes in high school.
“Vitiligo has taught me that I shouldn’t worry about what other people think.”
Now, Victoria proudly shows off her unusual look on social media and people love it.
She runs a TikTok page (@bevictoriious), where she debunks myths about her condition with 39,700 followers.
In a popular video, Victoria can be seen trying to cover her white eyebrow with make-up.
The video has gained over 1.6 million views and 205,400 likes with many users leaving heartwarming comments praising Victoria’s natural appearance.
“You don’t need to cover that up, it looks stunning,” one user commented.
"I love your natural look without them,” another user added.
“Please do a Cruella de Vil cosplay you would look STUNNING SIS,” a third user wrote.
Victoria has decided to no longer let her condition affect the way she feels about herself and has learned to love her unique look.
The mum said: “I feel like I’ve come a long way with how I feel about my appearance.
“I think a lot of it has to do with how I approach it mentally.
“Learning to accept being different has helped me accept my overall appearance.
"I’m sure like most people, I still have some off days but overall, I love myself.
“We live in a world with so many dark and negative things constantly in our faces, we need to be the light that shines through and overcomes any darkness or negativity.”
However, Victoria does sometimes “miss” the original colour of her lashes and eyebrows.
She added: “I used to cover my eyelashes and eyebrows with makeup!
“I recently covered my eyebrow just for fun, but the last time I did was in 2017.
“It didn’t look right to me. I have a mix of black and white lashes but mostly white.
“Now and then, I will cover up my lashes with mascara to feel ‘fancy’.
“If I’m being completely honest, I sometimes miss having ‘regular’ lashes.”
