A melting ice sheet in Greenland has released enough mass to cover the US state of Florida with 5 centimetres of water.

According to the Polar Portal the melting was the third-largest single-day loss of ice in Greenland since 1950.

Scientists also recorded the first rainfall on the summit of the island's ice cap for the first time.

The rainfall occurred on August 14 in an exceptionally hot Greenland, some temperatures were 18 degrees Celsius higher than average.

Footage from August 13 shows a polar bear navigate through a large ice floe in Greenland.
