Protesters dressed as giant inflatable breasts protest Facebook's nipple image algorithm

Frustrated medical areola, or ‘nipple’ artists, staged a protest outside Facebook’s London HQ on Wednesday 1 September dressed as giant inflatable breasts.

Facebook bans nudity, including most images of female nipples, though not male nipples.

As well as allegations of sexism, censorship and sexualisation, there have been complaints that the algorithm that largely determines which images are blocked often flags medical nipple tattoos as the real thing, leading to accounts being locked for days or even weeks on end.

The aim of Wednesday's protest was for all medical tattoo artists and breast cancer survivors to be able to freely post images on Facebook's social media platforms without being blocked or losing access to their accounts.
