The property where Of Mice and Men author John Steinbeck wrote several of his classic novels, including the aforementioned book, has hit the market.

But be prepared to shell out the cash for this piece of history – the unique two-bedroom home, located in Sag Harbor, an exclusive village in Long Island, New York, comes with an eye-watering price tag at $16.75 million.

Future residents will be able to enjoy some truly unique features such as Steinbeck's original 'writing hut' and a private 60ft pier, as well as a pool – and hasn't been for sale in 60 years.

Regarded as one of America’s most distinguished writers, Steinbeck resided in the house – which he described as his personal 'eden' and often referred to as ‘my little fishing place’ – until his death in 1968.

He also wrote Travels With Charley and The Winter Of Our Discontent while living there.

The humble but historic property sits just 580 ft from the waterfront of Morris Cove and Upper Sag Harbor, a highly sought-after patch of New York state real estate.

From the writing hut in the garden – which has been carefully preserved – Steinbeck crafted his classic novels while enjoying the breathtaking views over the cove.

The father-of-two, who won both a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize, built the space to allow for distraction-free writing.

The cosy cottage, which is featured on Top Ten Real Estate Deals, contains just two bedrooms and two bathrooms, despite its hefty price tag, but also includes a guest house, pool and private pier where the author used to fish.

In winter, the new owner can cosy up in front of the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and marvel at their cathedral-like beamed ceiling.

As for company, they will find themselves neighbours to celebrities including Richard Gere, Jimmy Buffett, Howard Stern and Paul Simon.

Steinbeck grew up in Salinas, California, but moved to New York in 1941.

After a weekend trip to Sag Harbor in 1955, the then 53-year-old bought the cottage, while married to his first wife Elaine Anderson Steinbeck, and remained there for most of his life.

The home is being marketed by Sotheby’s International Realty, Bridgehampton Brokerage.
