The video shows an annual swarm of Europe's largest mayfly (Palingenia longicauda). Central European river Tisa is home to millions of insects called Tisa mayflies.
Mayflies belong to the ancient group of insects dating back to the Carboniferous period.
Tisa mayfly larvae develop at the bottom of the river for three years before metamorphosis. After hatching the adults only have a few hours to mate before they die.
Once they have found a mate, the Tisa mayflies copulate on the surface of the water.
When larvae finally break for the surface of the river after three years, females moult once and males shed twice before reaching full sexual maturity.
Swarming can be seen only in mid-June in the afternoon, around 5:00 p.m.
