On the second day of Vertical Blue 2021 many more freediving milestones were accomplished.

Out of 25 performances a new set of eight National Records (NR) were achieved including Jung A Kim of Korea, Alejandro Lemus of Mexico, Alice Modolo of France, Yun-Chieh Ku of Taiwan, Talya Davidoff of South Africa, Camila Jaber of Mexico, Juani Valdivia of Peru and Isabelle Winner of the Bahamas.

What makes #VB2021 so special is not only the diverse field of athletes’ abilities but also the range of countries and backgrounds represented. Alice Modolo of France is a dentist, whose NR dive to 92 meters in bi-fins is only 2 meters away from the existing World Record. Juani Valdivia, of Peru spends most of his time doing very complicated neuro-surgery in the US, and Camila Jaber is both an advocate for women as well an engineering student who specializes in systems that improve the efficiency of creating clean water systems while avoiding having pollutants enter our aquatic ecosystems.

Jaber is a no-fins specialist and hopes to continue taking that discipline even deeper. “This year the ladies are so impressive, from Alenka to Alessia and of course Alice Modolo of France. It is a pleasure to be in their company and to see how much stronger the ladies are becoming and how much deeper we are going.”

A total of 21 nations are represented at this year’s freediving pinnacle, a total of 18 men and 24 women. In addition to the spectacular World Records that make history at Vertical Blue, sometimes a home-town heroine can do good as well. 21 year old Belle Winner of the Bahamas garnered two NRs in as many days and became the first Bahamian women to ever set a freediving record for her country. “I am proud to announce that I just set the first official female national record for the Bahamas at Vertical Blue!” exclaimed the burgeoning freediver, “I’d like to thank William Trubridge, the safety divers and the rest of the VB team for making my dream come true.”

With six more days of diving to come, Vertical Blue is sure to reveal even more new gold standards.
