Protesters faced off with police following the death of a teenage boy at a rally in Thailand.

Warit Somnoi, 15, died on Thursday of injuries that he sustained in August when he was allegedly shot in the back of the neck at a protest outside the Din Daeng district police station in the capital Bangkok.

Anti-establish groups and media in Thailand said it was the movement's first death. They gathered at the same police station on Friday October 29 to voice their anger with a protest.

Demonstrations have resumed in recent months following a fall in the number of Covid-19 cases and loosening of restrictions. Activists are pushing for democratic reforms to the country’s political and social structure.

However, government officials say the unrest is not widely supported and is being funded by disaffected opposition, exiled politicians and extremist groups who encourage students to join the protests. They claim that social media bots are being used to provoke civil disobedience among impressionable youth – who could then face years in prison for getting involved with the anti-establishment rallies.
