French police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at football fans on the Champs-Elysees on Saturday night (11 December).

Crowds of hundreds of fans had gathered to celebrate Algeria's win against Morocco in the quarter-final of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar, stopping traffic on the iconic Parisian avenue.

After they threw projectiles at police, the police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, before calm was restored at about 2am local time.

It is common in Paris, which has a significant Algerian-French minority population, for Algeria fans to gather in the area after big soccer wins.
