Anger over new COVID-19 restrictions boiled over in the Indian capital on Thursday (December 30) and commuters damaged several buses.

One of the rules imposed by the Delhi government to combat the Omicron variant means that buses must run at only 50 per cent seating capacity which immediately caused long queues during rush hour in the city of close to 22 million people.

Tensions flared at the Sangam vihar MB bus stop at 8 am local time after conductors followed the new rules by only allowing 17 people to board the vehicles.

Commuters were so incensed at not being able to get to work that they blocked the road and smashed bus windows.

Police arrived and dispersed the angry crowd.

In view of the rising cases of COVID amid omicron threat , government of Delhi have issued yellow alert and imposed several restrictions . In one of the restriction DTC buses and metro will run only with 50% of seating capacity . Due to this during office hours heavy rush gathers at bus stops and commuters have to wait long .
In one such incident on 30th December morning around 8 am there was heavy rush at Sangam vihar MB road bus stop . Several DTC buses came and was fully occupied of 50% capacity , in some of the bus , conductors and Marshalls were only allowing 17 passengers to sit as per latest guidelines of Delhi government
This agitated the people there and they started protesting on road blocking it , after some time some unruly people also damaged 4-5 buses . The police after some time neutralize and removed the protesting public
