Protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2, 2022 after a sudden sharp increase in prices for liquefied natural gas. The protests began in the oil city of Zhanaozen, but quickly spread to other cities: Alma-Ata, Aktau, Aktobe, Karaganda, Nur-Sultan, Shymkent, Kokshetau and Uralsk. In some cities, the protests turned into riots. On the evening of January 5, the President of Kazakhstan addressed the CSTO leaders with a request for support.

On the night of January 5-6, the CSTO Council agreed to send a collective peacekeeping force to Kazakhstan. In this regard, a number of Russian writers, journalists and politicians have sent an appeal to the Russian authorities not to interfere in the conflict in Kazakhstan.
