A mum has gone viral after creating a rainbow, Pride-inspired table for her son after he came out as gay.

Sharon Chandler, 60, from Cumbria, decided to create a show of support for her son Carl, 34, after he came out as gay.

Carl had asked his mother for ideas of Pride-coloured things he could have in the house he shares with partner James, and Sharon had the bright idea of a new coffee table.

“The seeds of an idea were planted I had seen a powerful picture of a ragged gay pride flag and it got me thinking and designing,” Sharon told Jam Press.

“Being gay is no different than not being gay – he’s my son, he’s a brother, he’s an uncle, he’s a cousin and mostly he’s the most loving, friendly and kind hearted boy you’d ever meet.

“The gay pride colours were just something to make as natural as crocheting a pink jacket for a baby girl.”

Sharon found a second-hand table on a local site saving items from landfill and took it home to begin the project.

To create the rainbow look, Sharon used resin with black mica powder mixed in to create the first layer of paint on the table, before applying clear resin over the top.

To add the Pride-inspired touch, she used the colours within the flag and poured them across the table at an angle.

To create a more patterned effect, she then used a heat gun to blow the edges into a softer appearance.

She then re-coated the table after it had dried, before dry brushing on a diamond tough varnish to create the shine.

She kept an eye on the table for two hours to ensure there were no unsightly drips, before the stunning addition to her son's home was complete.

In total Sharon spent £60 on materials – a huge saving compared to the cost of a new, similar piece of furniture that would have set her back around £500.

She shared the fruits of her labour on Facebook, where the post racked up more than 1,500 likes.

Viewers were quick to commend Sharon on her supportive stance – as well as her creative efforts.

One person said: “This is so beautiful, well done… You have now given me the inspiration to attempt this look with resin. Absolutely gorgeous, again well done.”

“What a lovely mum you are supporting your son in this way… You’ve done a brilliant job on this table and I bet your son can’t wait for his mates to see it and tell them that his lovely mum made it. Bet they’ll all be asking you to make them one,” another user commented.

Someone else said: “Wow very creative and secondly supreme parenting for teaching your son the rainbow is to be cherished.”

Other users called the finished look “stunning” and “amazing”.

Sharon said: “My son was extremely happy and a bit wowed over the table – both him and his partner James were thrilled with the table and it takes centre stage in their home.

Sharon now plans to turn her creative efforts to her own home, making some furniture for her kitchen.

She added: “My advice to anyone wanting to do something like this is to start small play with colours and have fun.

"You can add a lot of things to resin to make some amazing effects – just enjoy it and if you start small it won't cost you a fortune."
