The famous canals of Xochimilco, the last remnants of the extensive transportation system created by the Aztecs, lie in the south of Mexico City, next to a struggling working-class neighborhood. The colorful gondolas take visitors for rides alongside the boats of food vendors, artisans and mariachis.

A chinampa is an ancient Mesoamerican method of agriculture and territorial expansion that, through a kind of raft covered with earth, served to grow flowers and vegetables, as well as to expand the territory on the surface of lakes and lagoons in the Valley of Mexico; making Mexico-Tenochtitlan a floating city. They used them for agriculture and gain land from the lake waters.
