Thundering crowd cheers for female candidate in Philippine presidency as election nears
A huge crowd gathered to cheer for the female presidential candidate taking on the controversial son of the country's former dictator in the upcoming elections.
The length of Emerald Avenue in the Pasig City area of Manila thundered with chants and singing on March 20 as thousands of supporters of Leni Robredo arrived to show their support just 50 days before the Philippine national elections.
Pasig City Police estimated at least 137,000 people attended, with the crowd spilling over from the Ortigas business district into adjacent streets.
Crowds reportedly started streaming into the venue – adorned with pink flowers, banners, and balloons -hours before the program started at 4:30 pm local time.
Robredo later arrived and addressed her supporters in the evening, after performances from local bands and celebrities who have publicly endorsed her candidacy.
She is vying for the presidency of the Philippines, and has chosen the colour pink to brand her campaign. She is competing against nine other candidates, including controversial election poll frontrunner Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
A report by news agency AFP claimed that 'false and misleading claims have flooded Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Twitter in the lead-up to the May 9 polls, pounding Filipinos with a relentless barrage of propaganda on platforms' in support of Ferdinand Marcos Junior.
The Philippines will be holding its national elections on May 9 this year.
