A rhino calf was pictured sharing a sweet moment with its mum ahead of Mother’s Day on March 27 – as the two celebrated the holiday by tucking into a heart-shaped feast.

Southern white rhinoceros Tuli welcomed her baby Nandi in August 2021.

The duo – who live at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo – enjoyed a banquet of hay and pellets, lovingly arranged into a heart to honour the occasion.

In a clip filmed at the zoo, the rhino mum and her calf dash towards their heart-shaped dinner with no time to waste.

In one shot, the two dip their heads as they get stuck into the tasty snack.

In another picture, they can be seen grazing close by one another.

The family appear to share appreciative looks as they chow down.

Table manners were quickly abandoned for Tuli, who at one point has hay spilling out of her mouth as she enjoys her meal.

Team leader Mark Holden said: “Tuli has been an incredible mum to Nandi over the past seven months and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate her, as well as mums everywhere.

“Nandi is a very curious and boisterous calf, with loads of energy, so it must be a pretty tiring job for Tuli, keeping tabs on her all the time.

“Hay and pellets may not be every mum’s dream breakfast, but for a rhino mum, this is the perfect start to the day.

“If she’s really lucky, Nandi will allow her a nice quiet day of grazing and maybe even a nap!"
