A woman has shared the hilarious moment she accidentally came out to her grandmother – who thought she and her new fiancé were just “good roommates”.

Chelsea Gray, 26, an actress from Los Angeles, US, shared the sweet snap of her engagement ring with her grandmother Sandy McLemore, 60, by text message after her partner Alice proposed.

While Chelsea had never explicitly come out to her grandmother, she assuming her fiancé being present during various family holidays and events would have been enough of a hint that she was in a same-sex relationship.

During the text encounter, which Chelsea later posted to TikTok, she texts her grandmother ‘Guess what?’, sending a photo of her new engagement ring.

The couple had been dating for four-and-a-half years when Alice popped the question during a trip to Sedona, Utah, before heading up to Zion where the couple later posed for pictures.

After her grandmother Sandy asked who the lucky person to propose was – confessing she had thought her granddaughter was single – Chelsea replied: “Lol grandma I am dating Alice, didn’t you know?”

She then sent on a photo of herself with hugging with Alice.

To Chelsea’s surprise her grandmother replied: “Well I’ll be darn. No honey I did not know you were dating Alice. I just thought you had finally gotten a good roommate and became good friends too. Where are you taking pictures?”

After explaining to her grandmother how long she and Alice had been a couple, and so assumed she knew, her grandma came back with her response.

She said: “I am surprised of course and I am glad you are happy. Enjoy your vacation, I hear Sedona and Zion, Utah is very pretty. Who is looking after your pets? How long are you on vacation? I love you very much sweet-pea.”

“I was shocked! I had no idea that my grandma was that in the dark,” Chelsea told Jam Press.

“My fiancé is very obviously ‘gay’ in her appearance, and I just thought it was obvious that we were together. Why else would I bring this person to every major holiday and birthday?

“But when I thought about it a little more, I just figured that my grandma was probably wilfully ignorant.

“She is a religious woman, and truthfully I was nervous to have the ‘coming out’ conversation with her, so I just never did.

“I think it's also worth noting that I only see my grandma about two-three times a year, so even though my fiancé and I have been together for four years, that's not a lot of times she's been around my grandma.”

The TikTok of the exchange – captioned “surprise grandma!” – went viral with 3.2 million views, and racked up 211,000 likes.

One viewer commented: “She was so happy you finally found a good roommate.”

“‘Who’s taking care of your pets?’ is peak grandma love,” another user said.

Someone else added: “The fact that she was more concerned about who was taking care of your pets than your sexuality.”

“She’s seems so supportive! How sweet, and congratulations!!” said another viewer.

Someone else joked: “How amazing for your roommate to support your engagement by giving you a beautiful friendship ring.”

Chelsea added: “Looking back I probably should have [told my grandma], because I do care about my grandma being in the know about my life, and we used to be so close when I was younger, so it made me kind of sad that she wasn't aware that I was with someone romantically for the past four years.

“But now that it's out there, she has been nothing but supportive. It has been so sweet! Everyone loves grandma and I'm sure they only followed me to see more of her.”

“But overall the reaction is awesome and I'm glad that the video went to the right side of TikTok because I haven't really gotten any negative comments.”

When asked about if she had booked her wedding date, Chelsea said: “Not at all! I graduate college next month so I am focusing on that and then we will start planning. We are hoping for a year to a year-and-a-half long engagement.”
