British tourist facing prison after being arrested at illegal gambling den on Thai island
A British tourist was facing prison after being arrested at an illegal gambling den on a holiday island in Thailand.
The unnamed tourist was arrested along with 10 others - including eight locals, a Danish man, and a Cambodian national - for playing illegal poker games in a luxury villa in Phuket on July 29.
Police conducted the raid after receiving a tip-off about the event, which was advertised on social media. They were outraged that tourists were gambling - a crime punishable by up to a year in prison.
The post read: 'Who lives in Phuket? Please come and join us. Live Game. There is a party on the yacht. If interested, message us. There are plenty of girls.'
Officers seized gambling tables, cards, and chips worth about 2.6 million Baht (around 72,165 USD) from the venue. They also confiscated a laptop and documents dated July 28 recording the earnings and expenses of the players.
All 11 were charged with illegal gambling, while one person is facing extra complaints for organising the event and owning gambling paraphernalia.
Region 8 Police Commander Major General Naphanwut Liamsanguan said: ‘At around 3:30 am, police officers came together to inspect the site and found a group of gamblers all illegally playing poker cards.
‘We found out all of the suspects' names after the arrest. The Thai suspects had traveled from Bangkok to take part in the activity.
‘The suspects have pleaded guilty to all charges. They have been sent to the investigating officers of Phuket city for further legal proceedings.'
